[a very quick and rough blog post..thats how epiphanies work ;)]
im experiencing a full circle moment right now where i realize that 1) not only do i love my working situation i.e. my J-O-B but 2) im actually applying the skills that i learned from my experience as a bridges outreach director (and pass outreach coordinator) to what im currently doing with actia..things that i learned OUTSIDE of your typical classroom (but still in an educational institution aka college).
im helping administer funds that we receive from tax payers (approx. a half cent tax) for paratransit services for both seniors and people with (dis)abilities [bridges receives money from the asuc, student fees, the chancellor, cll/csl, and the governor and we give it back to the rrc's for program funding and collaborative/multicultural programming for bridges].
im fulfilling requests for publications that actia created to disseminate critical information about our services, other public interest/service oriented groups and individual consumers ask for these booklets to give to their constituents and/or family members [bridges directors before me created a resource guide, aka the "What's Next?" Guides, that i updated as well and we gave them out to middle school, high school, community college students as well as parents and other relatives to make the college application process easier and more accessible for students and their parents].
im doing full on outreach activities where i go to events to table and make presentations about the various paratransit services and resources that people can tap into and answering their questions about what services best fit their needs depending on their situations [bridges' main component is indeed outreach and recruitment and we do these outreach activities almost on a daily basis, breaking down what college is all about..especially for low income, first generation college students, putting a familiar face to a big, unfamiliar bureaucratic university system].
there are plenty other connections to make...moments to reflect on..conclusions to draw out but for now....
i love where i am currently working, its meaning, its purpose - actia, the alameda county transportation improvement authority. im going to work my ass off to make this work.
